Not Just a Meat-and-Bones Kind of Dog

Published on 1 May 2025 at 08:49

Did you know that dogs are omnivores?  This means that they eat both meat and plants.  Therefore your dog should be eating a dog food that has both.  There are some really good dog foods out there that are grain, soy, and corn free (to help alleviate allergies in dogs) that contain various meats and plants.  These days, dog food comes as kibble in bags, wet food in cans, concoctions found in refrigerated cases, and even food made specifically for your dog that is delivered to your door step.  Whichever food you choose to feed your dog, check the label on the dog food container.  Make sure that the first ingredient is meat and check for fruits and vegetables.  Just like the food we eat, we want most of the ingredients to be something we're familiar with and can pronounce.

Tip of the Month

Most people don't know that almost all dogs contract roundworms at some point in their lives.  Dogs usually get them as puppies, but they can get them as adults too, and most dogs don't show any symptoms.  However, if there's a serious infestation, symptoms could include vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, dull hair, and a pot-bellied appearance.  The good news is some heart worm preventatives can control roundworms.  Talk to your vet about what might work for your dog.

A Dog's Bedtime Prayer

Now I lay me down to sleep, the king size bed is soft and deep.

I sleep right in the center groove, so my human beings can hardly move.

I've trapped their legs, they're tucked in tight.

And here is where I'll pass the night.

No on disturbs me or dares intrude, till morning comes and I want food!

I sneak up slowly to begin, and nibble on my human's chin.

For morning's here, it's time to play.

And I always seem to get my way.

So thank you Lord for giving me, the human person that I see.

The one who hugs and hold me tight, and shares their bed with me at night.
